The Forest division comprises natural Forests in scattered patches, some of which are of special ecological value of these form the compact plantations raised on the banks of rivers and canals etc over the entire district.
The Cauvery delta of Thanjavur has rich potential as a major timber producing area and in future the entire requirement of teak for the state can be asset from Thanjavur only.
Brief History of the Office
Thanjavur Forest division was constituted during 1956 as per G.O.No.1584 Food and Agriculture dt. 20.6.1956, with the main object of raising teak plantations along the rivers and canals of the cauvery river system. Its Jurisdiction extends over three revenue districts viz. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.
Banks of rivers and canals of Cauvery, Vennal and Grand Anaicul running to thousands of Hectares is one of the biggest delta in Asia, offered the best land for raising teak plantations in Thanjavur Division. Originally the river and canal banks did not have well grown trees species and they were lying barren without vegetation. Teak was not at all found in the river and canal banks originally. On an experimental basis, teak was introduced in 1956 and it was found to establish and grow well.
So far teak plantations were raised in more than 20,000 Ha with the objectives of :
to meet the growing timber needs of the community
to undertake planting along the river and canals banks
to harvest matured teak and other trees as they are silviculturally matured.
to protect the river and canal banks from encroachment through planting.
to involve the communities in protection of river and canal bank plantations through reduction of biotic pressure.
An 80 year old teak tree raised at Koraiyar Head, near Needamangalam, by an Engineer of the PWD was spotted by the late V.S.Krishnaswamy, I.F.S., then CCF may back in 1950. The tree measured nearly 270 cm in girth. The girth of this tree and many other such trees raised in the same area indicated that they were better in quality than even the first quality teak trees in malabar and proved that teak is successfully grown in the plains of Thanjavur which received an annual rainfall of 700 to 1100 mm.
