         There are 29 District Rehabilitation Centres in the State of Tamil Nadu headed by the District Disabled Rehabilitation Officers in each district. The authority at the State level for this department is the State Commissioner for the Disabled, Chennai. This department has been bifurcated from the Department of Social Welfare and Noon Meal Programme during the year 1992 at the State level and the DRCs established during the year 1995 at the district level.
The aim of this department is to rehabilitate the disabled persons viz., Orthopaedically handicapped, Cerebral Palsy/Mentally retarded, visually handicapped, Speech and Hearing Impaired, Leprosy Cured Cases. The disabled persons are rehabilitated based on their category of disability, percentage of disability, ate, qualification and other aspects. They will be provided with scholarship, if they are school or college students, admission into special school/vocational training centres, if the students are deserving/interested. The disabled persons interested in self-employment ventures are provided with loan assistance towards establishing a small business of their own for their livelihood.

 

The disabled persons who are in need of medical assistance are being referred to the Government Raja Mirasdar Hospital, Thanjavur or to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, Thanjavur based on their disability.


The disabled persons requiring medical assistance at Pattukkottai/Kumbakonam Revenue Divisions are being referred to the Government Head Head Quarters Hospital located at the above places. Aids and appliances such as calipers, crutches, artificial limbs, crutches (auxiliary/elbow crutches), tricycles, wheel chairs, bicycles, hearing aids, solar batteries, goggles/folding sticks, Braille watches etc. are being issued to the disabled persons free of cost based on their disability certificates and the camps that are being conducted in various places. Thus, the disabled persons are given medical, educational, vocational, and socio-economic assistance towards providing them total rehabilitation. For disabled children/ disabled persons who could not be rehabilitated otherwise, Maintenance Grant/
  Physically Handicapped Pension is provided.


            Towards encouraging the marriage of the disabled persons, a scheme is being implemented in the name "marriage assistance to the normal person marrying a disabled person viz. orthopaedically handicapped/ cerebral palsy/ mentally retarded/ visually handicapped/ speech and hearing impaired/ leprosy cured cases."
The amount is given in the name of the couples getting married to each other and this gives a sort of status and security to the disabled persons.Free bus pass is being given to the disabled persons who are school going/college going and also to who are employed/ self-employed based on their real need.
